Me and hobbies

So Many Hobbies, So Little Mastery (And That’s Okay)

Hi, I’m someone with ADHD—which basically means my brain is constantly on the lookout for something novel, quirky, and preferably fun. If it sparkles, sings, or involves paint, I’m interested. Like many folks with ADHD, I’ve spent a good chunk of my life dreaming of becoming a guitar legend, a bestselling author, and a brilliant visual artist. All at the same time, of course.

The only catch? Mastery takes time, consistency, and a whole lot of patience—none of which are my brain’s strong suit. It’s a bit like trying to herd squirrels during a fireworks display.

Now that I’m in my 60s, I’ve made peace with the fact that I might never master any one of those pursuits. But that doesn’t mean I’ve thrown in the towel—I’ve simply lowered the bar a little and given myself permission to enjoy the journey instead. And you know what? That feels pretty great.

Somewhere along the way, I picked up a hobby that didn’t even feel like a hobby at first: taking online art and music courses. I thought I was just dabbling, but it turns out I was quietly building a little treasure chest of creative experiences. One day, while watching a watercolour course, something finally clicked and I thought, “Ohhh—that’s what those other instructors were trying to explain.” And just like that, the idea for this blog was born.

This blog is where I’ll share my experiences as a proud hobbiest exploring online art and music courses—starting with my deep dive into watercolour, graphite, and acrylic painting. And hopefully, in time, I’ll branch out to talk about my guitar playing adventures and writing course explorations too.

One thing I want to make clear right from the start: this isn’t a place where I’ll be critiquing instructors or rating their talent. I truly believe that any artist who puts their work out into the world deserves admiration. Whether their style aligns with mine or not, I have nothing but respect for the courage it takes to share creative work with others. I’m not here to judge—I’m here to learn, experiment, and celebrate the beautifully imperfect path of being a lifelong beginner.

Ready to come along for the ride?

Hello, I am from Huntsville, Ontario Canada. I have a Ph.D. in Psychology and work as a registered psychotherapist. Like you, I have dreams and goals beyond my academic leanings. In this blog I plan to explore these dreams, what helps me move forward, and most importantly, identify what is holding me back. Perhaps in these pages you will recognize something of your own pursuits and struggles. I hope you enjoy my internal musings. -Shelley_
